Comforting Words

Comforting Words

‘One of the arguments we often use for not writing is this: “I have nothing original to say. Whatever I might say. someone else has already said it, and better than I will every be able to.” This, however, is not a good argument for not writing. Each human being is unique and original, and nobody has lived what we have lived. Furthermore, what we have lived, we have lived not just for ourselves but for others as well. Writing can be a creative and invigorating way to make our lives available to ourselves and to others.

We have to trust that our stories deserve to be told. We may discover that the better we tell our stories the better we will want to live them.’ – Henri Nouwen

I quote Nouwen’s stuff a lot. His words have comforted, encouraged, revitalized and resonated with me so many times over the years. I wonder sometimes what I would have done had he never chosen to pen down his wise and compassionate ruminations. This what-if and the above quote reminds me that writing does not have to be just some narcissistic form of self actualization – at the end of the day, the words go out there (independent of the writer) and stretch out a hand so others might feel less alone, less ignorant, less bored, less stifled, less hopeless.

  1. Wise words from Nouwen which reminds me that I should blog more often!

  2. @dimsumdolly: the mysterious thing is, i just somehow can’t get access to your blog and i miss your stuff!
