Enough of idealistic philosophizing - now it's down to the nuts and bolts of being a more focused freelancer. Somehow, this quote spoke to me in a really hard-hitting, whaddayadoin' way because I've become quite the Internet addict and while surfing "for fun" in the midst of working is always a great pick-me-up, it also means I haven't been doing all the things I want/should/ought to do. This really bugs me. I think if anything, this month has been a lesson that time is finite...so I oughta … [Read more...]
Nurturing Nature
Back from the "physically challenging" assignment in the jungle - the one where I sort-of-then-got-too-busy/lazy-to-train-for-but-fortunately-I-did-that-little-bit-of-running-about-as-there-was-a-lot-of-climbing-involved. A colourful bag of reactions take place everytime I end up in 'natural settings'. I like to tell people I'm a nature lover because I like to chill out around trees and find it pleasing to take dips in rivers and beaches. But then, it's glaringly obvious I am a creature of … [Read more...]
Two Houses
It's funny where freelance writing takes you sometime. This week, I ended up in two rather interesting places. The first place was a place full of old, forgotten stories. Even with all the construction drilling and wet cement, I kept wondering about the people who had been in this house - fervently planning revolutions from afar, determined to change the world they lived in. The second place was a place full of sea breeze and money. I felt like I was in this suburban resort paradise … [Read more...]
Matchmade
In line with the whole "branding consistency" thing, I felt it was time for a new namecard design to go with the sort-of new website. A very sweet designer friend helped me with this and ta-dahhh, ain't it a cutie patootie? It's quite cool to have a website and a namecard done by people who managed to get what kind of aesthetic I was looking for so quickly - really appreciate their intuitiveness and efficiency in whipping things up which I instantly love! Now if only I could have that kind … [Read more...]
The One Where I “Professionally Guide” People
This week, I got roped into a secondary school's "Professional Guidance Day" where a bunch of professionals gathered to talk to their graduating students about well, professional stuff. There was a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, a nurse, an interior designer, an air stewardess, a BBC presenter, a DJ, a Chinese book author, and me (who somehow ended up with a freelance writer-lecturer hyphenate based on my profile). I ended up talking mostly about writing - only two students raised their hands … [Read more...]
Quote of the Moment #4
“If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will … [Read more...]
